If you’ve been following cruise news lately, you’ve probably heard the buzz: Celebrity Cruises is launching a river cruise line. And no, this isn’t just a side project – they’re going all in with 10 ships on order and a debut planned for 2027.
This is actually pretty significant. Celebrity becomes the first major mainstream ocean cruise line to jump into the river cruise market, and they’re doing it in typical Celebrity fashion – with style and ambition.
What We Know So Far
Celebrity River Cruises will kick off with two ships – the Celebrity Compass and Celebrity Seeker – hitting the water in 2027. They’ll be sailing Europe’s most popular rivers, the Rhine and Danube, with 33 seven-night itineraries planned for that first season. Four more ships will follow in 2028, and another four in 2029, bringing the total fleet to 10.
Each ship will carry around 180 passengers, making them among the larger river vessels out there. But size isn’t the only thing Celebrity is changing. These ships are being designed with inspiration from their award-winning Edge-class ocean ships, featuring open decks, 360-degree views, and what they’re calling “Infinite Balcony Suites” – basically, spacious staterooms where the balcony is seamlessly integrated into your room.
The cruise line is also making these all-inclusive, which means your drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic), Wi-Fi, shore excursions, and other onboard experiences are all bundled into the fare. No surprise bills at the end of your trip.
Why This Matters
River cruising has been booming, especially in Europe, but it’s traditionally been dominated by dedicated river cruise companies like Viking, AmaWaterways, and Uniworld. Celebrity’s entry changes the game because they’re bringing a massive loyal customer base with them. According to Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty, about half of Celebrity’s ocean guests have either already taken a river cruise or plan to in the future.
The demand has been intense. When Celebrity opened priority booking access requiring a $500 deposit back in September, it reportedly sold out in just six minutes. That’s not a typo – six minutes. Clearly, people are excited about experiencing river cruising “The Celebrity Way.”
What Makes It Different?
Celebrity is promising to bring their signature elevated experience to the rivers. That means their renowned hospitality, sophisticated dining programs, and attention to design details. They’re also planning multiple ports per day on some itineraries and overnight stays in key cities, giving you more time to actually explore rather than rushing through.
Pre and post-cruise stays in cities like Prague and Budapest will be available to extend your trip, all seamlessly arranged by Celebrity.
The Bottom Line
Is Celebrity going to shake up the river cruise market? It’s hard to say this far out, but the early signs suggest they’re onto something. River cruising appeals to travelers who want a more intimate, destination-focused experience, and Celebrity has proven they know how to deliver premium vacations.
We’ll be watching closely as more details emerge about itineraries, pricing, and onboard experiences. If you’re interested in being among the first to sail, you can visit Celebrity’s website to get on their interest list.
